Positioned at the confluences of the three greatest mountain ranges, the Karakoram, Himalayas, and Hindu Kush, the region is home to more than 7000 massive and small glaciers. This extraordinary geographic location plays a prominent role in producing such a huge chain of glaciers in the region. Each village or town in the area has its own glacier, prominently visible or tucked away in the mountains. These glaciers serve as the only source of water both for drinking and agricultural purposes.

The Italian Research Association EVK2CNR team mapped 13,032 small and large glaciers in Pakistan, with a combined area of 13,546.93 km2. These glaciers were referred to as the largest freshwater reserve in Asia. Most of these glaciers, according to the research team, were located in the northern areas of Pakistan.

The glaciers in Pakistan present a truly dramatic landscape. If you ever have the chance to traverse through these giant rivers of ice, you will notice that, at some point, the surface is completely covered with massive boulders and rubble. This section makes it nearly impossible to see the ice beneath. Whatever your average trekking speed is, it will probably be lower than your average when crossing such a rugged section of the glacier.

Then there comes the white glacier, where the ice becomes clearly visible, and the landscape transforms into giant rivers of ice stretching as far as the eyes could see. Although this section offers breathtaking views that feel truly out of this world, it also becomes extremely challenging for trekkers at the same time. It contains numerous crevasses, and a single wrong step can seriously put your life at risk.
